Themes
In this tutorial you will learn how to install and activate themes. You can change the way your website looks by either installing a theme or modifying the source codes. With themes, you can choose from a selection that’s built around WordPress or search for one that’s available for download on the internet. Some of these themes are free and some you will have to pay for. By downloading the theme’s zip file, you will need to upload this to your website which will be shown later.
The best time to choose a theme is when you are just setting up your website. It should not be a problem changing themes sometime in the future as long as your website is not heavily customised. To change the current theme of your website after you have downloaded the theme’s zip file from its website, just follow the step below. If you do not have a theme yet, take time to visit our WordPress Themes section to see if you can choose one.
1. Once logged in the dashboard click the Appearance menu
2. This should show you the Install Themes page. Otherwise click the menu item Install Themes
3. Click the Install Themes tab
4. Click the Upload link
5. Click on the Browse button then choose the zip file that you have downloaded
6. Click the Install Now button
7. When the installation is succesful, click the Activate link
Alternatively, you can install a theme by searching for themes listed in WordPress. This saves you the hastle of searching for a theme on the internet when you can search inside your WordPress dashboard and even see a preview of it prior to installing and activating the theme. Found below are the steps to change your theme:
1. Once logged in the dashboard click the Appearance menu
2. This should show you the Install Themes page. Otherwise click the menu item Install Themes
3. Click the Install Themes tab
4. The search option should be the defaul, otherwise click on the Search link
5. Enter a search term then click on the Search button
6. This will bring up a list of themes that have the search term you have type in.
6. If you found the theme you liked click the Install link
7. When the installation is succesful, click the Activate link
And now you are ready to configure your Settings.
Widgets
Widgets are usually found on the left hand side and the right hand side of a web page. This section enables you to modify these areas – including the header and footer – of your web page using widgets. Widgets are plugins that make it easier for the user to modify the visual design and features (i.e. search bar) of a website.
To activate a widget, perform the following steps:
1 – Click on the Appearance menu from your Dashboard
2 – From the Appearance menu click on Widgets
3 – On the Widgets page, select a widget by drag and dropping it to a section to the right hand side as shown in the screenshot above. In this case, the Search widget is selected and dragged to the right side bar. The theme used here is: Amazing Grace.
Editor
The editor in the Appearance menu allows you to modify and update files found the right hand side of the screen. These are files that can change the appearance of your WordPress website. Do not modify them if you are not familiar with PHP, CSS, HTML and/or jQuery as a small update such as removing HTML tags can drastically alter the appearance and functionality of your website.
