Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an evolving art. The process of taking a website to the top pages of major search engines has change quite dramatically. But there are things that never change such as having great content. What changes are the algorithm that ranks these websites. That’s because there are indiviudals who try to game the system. These are ususally called black hat SEO techniques. Five years ago, if your web page contains the keywords that people are searching for, then you web page can rank competitively. So what these black hat SEO practitioners did was to spam the page with those keywords and made the fonts’ color similar to the color of
the page’s background. This enables them to put just graphics on the page and still rank well.
Today, content still is king when it comes to getting a good rank. And
search engines like Google continue to seek out these black hat techniques in order to improve their algorithm. So if you try to employ the black hat technique above then chances are your website will be in Google’s sand pit. Google’s algorithm now takes note of such techniques and also takes note of how the content is structured, and if there are any spelling and grammatical errors too. It also takes note on how “rich” the content is. And this involves looking for keywords, the length of the content and the relevance of the content with the site. And that’s why with the latest Panda update, those that were hit were sites that were relegated as content farms.
Search engines are looking for relevance and having a quality user
experience when it comes to website ranking. Before, it is easy to get good ranking if you have a lot of backlinks. So it did not matter then if your site is about living in the north pole and you had a lot of backlinks from technology sites. Today, those links need to be relevant with your website. Things have changed. And all these changes are good – especially for the consumers.
For this first half of 2011 alone, Google made hundreds of ranking algorithm changes. And this is what makes a tutorial website about SEO such an evergreen product or service. There will never be no end as to what topics to post because you can always post topics about theses changes and how they affect websites. As long as search engines continue to improve the quality of their searches, then SEO tutorial sites will always be a winner. And these search engines will continue to seek out improvement – there’s no doubt about that. Why? Becasue there is no shortage of individuals who practice black hat techniques.
