If you are thinking of setting up your own tutorial website, it’s best to do your research first. Questions that need to be answered is are people looking for such information online? If so how big a search volume does your keyword(s) have? Is your keyword(s) trending upward or downward? Keywords in this context are the words that users type in order to search for the topic on your website such as: website tutorial.
A recent example here is Flash. Although Flash is being used in 90% of online sites, the technology is in a declining trend. Although it is in a decline, it has much more presence than WordPress. At the time of this writing, there are 101 MM global monthly searches for flash against 30 MM global monthly searches for wordpress. So the question here is, assuming you know how to teach both technologies, should you set up a wordpress website tutorial or should you set up a flash website tutorial? The answer lies in the ultimate objective on why you want to set up a tutorial website. If it is a hobby then none of the questions would matter. But if you would like to do some commercial activities then answering the questions above are really important. An important concept in doing business is to skate where the puck is – which is a quote by Steve Jobs founder of Apple. He actually got this from Wayne Gretzky who is considered the greatest hockey player of all time. This means that it is better to set up a tutorial website that is trending upward if you are looking for a long term business. It is easier to also acquire loyal follower too compared to an older technology (i.e. Flash). There are 268 MM indexed pages in Google’s SERP (Search Engine Result Pages) for flash tutorial versus 60 MM for wordpress tutorial. What these means is that if you plan to set up a Flash tutorial website it would be more difficult to rank your site to the top versus ranking for a wordpress website tutorial.
Some questions are easier answered than others. For example, when you research for Java in Google trends, you will find that it is in a declining trend. Some technology “experts” are also predicting the demise of Java in favor of other technologies such as PHP. So if you are planning a Java tutorial you might think it might not be worthwhile right? After all, who would like to set up a tutorial site where the interests of online users wane year by year? But then think again of the underlying trend (these are trends that are not yet recognize by the online community overall). The obvious trend is that smart phone online surfing and smart phone apps are fast rising. Android, which is Google’s smart phone operating system, is also growing month by month in terms of number of activation. And Java is one of the programming tools that’s being used to create these smart phone apps.
So the bottom line is that it is quite easy to determine what website tutorial to avoid if you are planning to set up one and yet at the same time there are some topics that are hard to determine whether it is trending downwards. The key here is to do much research before diving in. It’s easier though to go with the most obvious trend. And this is what we did before setting up this WordPress tutorial.
