When your site is under maintenance, sometimes it is best to keep your website’s interface away from the public space so that when things go horribly wrong during maintenance (i.e. displaying confidential data so that you can debug), then the risk is mitigated. A Site Maintenance plugin – or Wet Maintenance – places your website into maintenance mode by delivering a ’503 Service Unavailable’ status to all unauthenticated clients. The plugin was developed by Robert Wetzlmayer which probably explains the name of the plugin.
The plugin is pretty straight forward. Once you install and activate it, you can still see how your website looks like as long as you are logged in to your dashboard. however, the moment you log out you get to see the following message once you visit your site again:
Service unavailable.
Please check back later…
So it’s as simple as that. It’s a no-frills plugin.
